Read more>> Quizbowl By Taren Swartz, Reporter Quizbowl is a knowledge based competition where students contend to correctly answer random trivia questions. Questions range from math to world literature, including questions about Finnish composers, health, and world history. Read more>> Glitter in spaceGlitter, yes I am referring to the tiny little sparkly pieces that as a first grader you undoubtedly dumped uncontrollably all over every single craft project you encountered. Now scientists are aiming to use glitter on something a little bigger than a craft project. Researchers are planning on using large pieces of glitter to act as telescope mirrors. Read more>>
Model UNModel UN will be attending a competition on February 19 and 20 at Penn State Harrisburg. The model UN competition is hosted once a year. Model UN is an educational simulation and academic competition in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Read more>>
key points to the KeystonesIn early January, BSHS gave the Keystone Exams for algebra, literature, and biology. The Keystones are the state-developed end-of-course exams to ensure students in Pennsylvania reach a certain level of understanding of the three courses. They are distributed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and have replaced the PSSA at the high school level. Read more>>
Back to the futureIn the 1980s people could only dream about the technology that was on the horizon. The creation of the internet, CDs and cell phones were the most inventive items of the time. Blasting off in styleOver thirty years ago a man named Alan Bond began a new design for rocket ships to replace the models that were first used in the 1960’s. Those antiquated designs that are still launched today not only cost hundreds of millions of dollars but also can only be used one time. The spring musical, Funny Girl, will be held Thursday, February 26- Sunday, February 29. Set in New York City, the show follows Vaudeville star Fanny Brice through her career with the Ziegfeld Follies and her whirlwind romance with gambler Nick Arnstein. With the comical characters of Mrs. Brice, Fanny’s hopeful mother, and Mrs. Strakosh, the nagging next door neighbor, and with the musical stylings of the Ziegfeld girls, the show is sure to be a hit. Mini-Thon The Mini-thon committee has many events planned for the new semester. The last stall day, which was held on December 17, raised about $1,500. Thon chairs are planning to host another stall day before mini-thon in March. Currently, Mini-Thon is hosting a t-shirt design competition for the Thon t-shirts. The top four designs will be presented at lunches and students will vote on their favorite design. The winner will receive a $25 gift card. Information about the competition can be found in room 202. The group is also planning to sell paper diamonds to students whose family has been effected by cancer of any kind. Applications will also be available for man pageant soon, however no exact dates have been set yet. Watch for upcoming details about Thon events. Leah Eshelman Junior Leah Eshelman has been named the second place winner in the Benjamin Franklin Scholar award essay competition. The competition is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society and is offered to all juniors in Pennsylvania. Leah wrote an essay titled “Franklin’s Ideal Society,” in which she analyzed a quote from Benjamin Franklin and related it to modern day society. She will receive a $2,000 scholarship and is invited to The Pennsylvania Society’s Award Luncheon in Philadelphia in April. Congratulate Leah Eshelman on this great achievement. FBLA Goes to States
Members of the Future Business Leaders of America attended the regional conference on December 16. Members of FBLA competed in differing business categories by taking a test. Taylor Dragon, Cameron Danesh, Ryan Fisher, Elizabeth Hammond, Max Leo, Lauren Lunde, Claire Lynch, Taylor Martin, Ryan Meneses, Nathan Pittenger, Taren Swartz, Braedon Swindler, Erin Thompson, Trent Thompson, and Christian Torio all placed highly in his or her competitive events. They are all eligible for the state level conference and competition that will be held on April 13-15. |
