Golf 'Fore' Jackie
By Andrew Keller, Reporter
When senior golf team members Steven Jumper and Derek Snyder heard about the tragic assault on Jackie Lithgow in late February, they immediately thought about what they could do to help the family in any way they could. “The Lithgows are a great family, one that the whole community cares about, and we wanted to help and show our support for them as best we could,” said Snyder. Because Mr. Lithgow is an assistant golf coach and Jackie played on the team while in high school, Jumper and Snyder have a close connection with the family. To show support, the two decided to pull together other members of the BSHS golf team and organize a golf tournament which will raise money, 100% of which going directly to the Lithgow family.
The tournament will be held on May 31st at Mayapple Golf Links. A team of four players is required to enter the event, and will cost $300 ($75 per person). Flyers for entering the tournament and that have more information and details will be placed throughout the high school. For non-golfers, there is still an opportunity to participate in the event. There will be a lunch directly following the round of golf, which will cost fifteen dollars for persons not playing golf (golfers lunch included in original cost). Also, sponsorships for the tournament are being sold to any interested businesses or individuals, and signs with the business logo or a message to the Lithgows will be displayed on the course during the tournament. There will also be flyers with more information on sponsorships posted throughout the school. For any questions or to get one of the flyers, talk to Jumper or Snyder or contact them by email at [email protected].

Spring Sports Updates

As of 4/16/14
Baseball: 4-5
The Bubbler baseball team started the season off hot with two shutout victories by a combined score of 11-0. Since then, the team has lost 5 of 7. With twelve games left to play in the regular season, there is plenty of time for the Bubblers to get back on the winning track. Pitchers Josh McCoy and Travis Wickard have each shown promise thus far this season, but will need to continue to have strong outings as the team enters the second half of its regular season schedule. In their five losses this season, the team has only scored eight total runs, meaning the offensive production will have to increase and be consistent during the end of April and into May in order for the team to make a playoff push.
Softball: 0-7
The Bubbler softball team has yet to win a game in the early going of the 2014 season, largely because of a young roster and a lack of experience. Kim Rogers, Delaney Gitt, and Lauren Otto are the only players with any previous significant varsity time, and have lead the team thus far. With ten regular season games remaining, the lady Bubblers, like the baseball team, have plenty of time to salvage their season and will rely on their veterans to do so, but they will need less experienced contributors to step up.
Girls’ Track and Field: 4-1
With only one loss thus far through the first five dual meets, the girls’ track and field team has shown balance and talent across the board. On the track, Leanne Weaver has backed up last year’s freshman campaign (where she medaled at the state meet in the 1600 meter run) by dominating events ranging from the 100 hurdles to the 1600. In shorter distances, Mary Kate and Emma Spisak have looked strong thus far this season, including leading the 400 meter relay to victories at each meet. In the field, Taylor Weiss has already broken two school records in the shot-put and her own previous discuss record, dominating the rest of the field.
Boys’ Track and Field: 2-3
After a 2-0 start, the boys’ track and field team has dropped its last three meets, but has looked strong thus far in certain events of the 2014 season. Senior Jonathan Goodson has shown that he is one of the best runners in the state this year, looking strong in the 400, 800, and also breaking the thirty plus year old school mile record. Underclassmen Chase Edwards, Yanny Tran, and Brian Malone have done well in the sprinting competitions, and these three along with Tshawn Hicks have shown promise in the 4x100 meter relay this season. In the field, Aaron Derk has won four of the five javelin competitions this year, and will continue to improve as the season goes along. The team will have to step up in the weeks ahead to win the division and send competitors to the postseason.
