Do students have too much pressure?
Stress is a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in life, work, or can also be defined as something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxiety. School work, sports, clubs, and jobs are all activities that add stress to high school students. Parents, teachers, and coaches all have their own expectations and requirements. This extra pressure can cause mental break downs and make young adults worry and panic about their grades and their performance in extra curriculum.
Many teachers assign homework every night. Time spent on homework has increased in recent years, but educators say that is because the assignments have also changed. High school students get assigned up to 17.5 hours of homework per week, according to a survey of 1,000 teachers. Having multiple core classes in a semester can multiply the time spent on homework each night. In addition to school work, student athletes have practices daily and games throughout the week. Attending practice, having dinner, and then working on homework does not allow the ideal eight hours of sleep recommended by National Sleep Foundation. Coaches want their athletes to be well rested and ready for all games and practices. Not only is homework a factor, grades may be a source of stress as well many parents want to see their children striving. Grades affect teenagers on a daily basis. Critical of grades and have a high standards. Along with grades parents also want their high school students to be involved with sports, clubs and get the optimal hours of sleep. Academic performance and extra-curricular activities may mean the most in the grand scope of the future for a teenager. Colleges are getting more expensive and it seems harder to meet their requirements according to actstudent.org. With all of these stressors in a teenagers life, students may start to break down and feel overwhelmed. |
