BOYS' BASKETBALL OFF TO A STELLAR START
On December 6, the boys’ basketball team received the first place trophy at the 23rd Annual Paul Corby Tournament for the third consecutive year. This home court tip-off tournament started the season and set the bar high for the rest of the year.
Friday, December 5 was the first night of the tournament. The team faced the Greenwood Wildcats who could not seem to burst Boiling Springs’ bubble. Senior Garret McHenry added 18 points to the scoreboard along with fellow senior Trent Thompson’s 13 points. All twelve players on the Bubbler team scored including senior Matt Barber, and juniors Hunter Breon and Rakhi Dockens who bucketed 11 points. Boiling Springs attained a total of 81 points, beating the Wildcats’ 37 points. This moved the boys onto the championship game the following night.
Boiling Springs faced the Spring Grove Rockets on Saturday, December 6. The Bubblers held the lead the entire time. McHenry contributed 20 points to the board. With a final score of 67-54, the Bubblers rose to the top and won the tournament. Thompson and McHenry were given trophies for the All-Tournament Team because of their outstanding skill and hard work in the games.
On Wednesday, December 10, the Bubblers played at Cumberland Valley High School. Although the score was back and forth, they fought to the finish. The game intensified in the fourth quarter where McHenry scored 10 of his overall 23 points. With few minutes to go in the final quarter, the teams were tied 48-48. The Bubblers broke the tie to top of this high energy game with a 52-51 win.
On Friday, December 12, the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils tried their best, but could not top the Bubblers. The game gained intensity in the fourth quarter. The scores were dangerously close, but with the help of McHenry’s 19 points and Bryan Malone’s 16, Boiling Springs won with a score of 75-71.
The boys travelled to Big Spring on Tuesday, December 16 with goals to bring their record to 5-0. With 18 points from McHenry and 13 from Dockens, the Bubblers beat their rival, the Bulldogs. The Bubblers kept the lead of the game and finished strong, 68-47.
Friday December 19 was a heated game against Shippensburg. Dockens scored a majority of Boiling Springs’ points with 23 baskets. Although the Bubblers fought to keep the game close, foul trouble allowed the Greyhounds to get ahead. The Bubblers took their first loss with an upsettingly close game, 51-49.
